Fruita man arrested in death of roommate
A Fruita man has been arrested on suspicion of second- degree murder after his roommate was fatally shot in the head during a Friday night dispute at their Fruita mobile home.
Wayne Gert, 37, was in custody at Mesa County Jail on Saturday, but he did not have bond set as of the afternoon.
Henry J. Trisler Jr. 37, was killed by a gunshot wound to the head, according to the Mesa County Coroner’s Office.
Trisler’s manner of death is listed as a homicide.
According to an arrest affidavit, Gert told Fruita Police Sgt. Kevin Paquette that he had Trisler in his home at 530 Virgo Way.
Gert also told Fruita police officer Josh Dove on the scene that the victim “doesn’t need medical attention, he needs the coroner. I’ve been trained to shoot and kill,” the affidavit said.
Gert told police he shot Trisler in self-defense after Trisler “was screaming at him and getting within inches of his face,” according to the arrest affidavit said.
Gert said he retrieved a handgun that he keeps near his chair and raised it at Trisler.
Gert said Trisler made some statements about the gun and lunged at him.
Gert told police he fired the gun once and Trisler fell to the floor, the affidavit said.
An officer at the scene reported in the affidavit that Gert was visibly intoxicated, and Gert admitted to Fruita police officers that he had been drinking alcohol and that he was intoxicated.
Gert told his girlfriend, who was not in the room at the time of the shooting, that he had shot Trisler and asked her to call 911, the affidavit said.
According to a Facebook page for Wayne Gert, his occupation is listed as being in the U.S. Army.
Henry Trisler is listed as one of Gert’s friends on the website.
