GJ Economic Partnership names director for interim

The interim head of the Grand Junction Economic Partnership will embark on a tour of the Grand Valley aimed at sparking new interest in the organization.

In the short term, Kelly Marlin said, she hopes such a tour will “get people re-engaged with GJEP” and gain confidence “in me and the important work that GJEP is doing.”

Marlin, 32, was appointed to head the partnership on an interim basis after the resignation last month of Ann Driggers. Driggers had worked for the organization for a decade, and she plans to remain with the organization as it completes its transition to permanent new leadership.

Marlin has been business-development manager at the partnership since 2008 and was recognized as the 2011 Rookie of the Year by the Economic Development Council of Colorado. Marlin completed the International Economic Development Council’s Basic Economic Development Course in 2009.

The partnership board plans a search for a permanent replacement, and “I suspect Kelly will apply,” GJEP Board Chairman Steve Gunderson said.

Marlin said she hopes for the opportunity to compete for the permanent post as president and chief executive officer of the private organization that was established to encourage the creation of quality employment in Mesa County.

Marlin’s presence in Grand Junction is reflective of the partnership’s previous success.

Her husband, Jon Flenniken, works at Reynolds Polymer, which was lured to Grand Junction by the partnership when it was known as the Mesa County Economic Development Council.

Marlin holds a bachelor’s degree in political science from Knox College in Galesburg, Ill., and a paralegal degree from Loyola University-Chicago. Before relocating to Grand Junction, she worked for Denver Parks and Recreation and before that for the city of Chicago.

She and her husband are natives of Idaho Springs.
