GJ’s Robinson leads 5 Western Slope players on CHSAA all-state team

Broderick Robinson, a standout guard for Grand Junction High School, was one of five area all-state basketball selections announced Thursday by the Colorado High School Activities Association.

Robinson was selected to the Class 5A second team after leading the Tigers 21-3 record, including a 10-0 mark in the Southwestern League. Robinson was sixth in scoring in Class 5A, averaging 20.9 points per game, and he averaged 10 rebounds per game.

Grand Valley’s Sam Parker, who led Class 3A in scoring average with 21.5 points per game, was a third-team all-state pick in 3A. Parker led the Cardinals to the 3A state playoffs, where they fell to Colorado Springs Christian in the second round.

For the all-state girls teams, Rifle senior Chante Church was a tabbed as a Class 4A third-team selection after finishing third in 4A in scoring average with 20 points per game. She led the Bears to a first-round upset of Sierra before losing to eventual state runner-up Broomfield in the state playoffs.

Meeker’s Taylor Neilson and Paonia’s Carson Pipher, both seniors, earned second-team all-state selections in Class 2A.

Neilson helped the senior-heavy Cowboys to the state semifinals, where they fell to eventual champion Lutheran by one point. She was a well-rounded player, finishing second on the team with 12.2 points per game, and she added 5.3 rebounds, 3 assists and 2.1 steals per game.

Pipher led a balanced, athletic Paonia squad that reached the final eight in the 2A state tournament. Pipher led the team in scoring, averaging 11 points per game, and she had a team-best 3.5 steals per game.
