Goodbye to a longtime fixture on North Ave.
The closing of the Eastgate City Market has been discussed for a number of years. Now, it appears it will actually occur next month.
We certainly understand why the company is closing the store. A recession and competition from other grocery outlets in the area have meant the City Market in the Eastgate Shopping Center is no longer meeting its sales goals, according to a spokeswoman for the company.
And City Market has a new store opening on 24 Road, although company officials say the opening of that store isn’t driving the closing of the old one.
Even so, the City Market store on North Avenue has been a neighborhood fixture for more than 35 years. It’s been a convenient place for many people living in northeast Grand Junction, and a mainstay that helps attract customers to other businesses in the Eastgate Shopping Center.
The closing of a store is not the end of the world, but there’s little doubt the Eastgate City Market will be missed.
