Grand Junction Regional Airport nets $5M for concrete work

Grand Junction Regional Airport is slated to receive a $5 million federal grant to replace a concrete air carrier ramp at the west end of the airport.

Mesa County commissioners on Monday signed off on a grant agreement with the Federal Aviation Administration that will reimburse the airport for the cost of the work.

Airport Manager Rex Tippetts said the project represents the sixth of seven to replace crumbling and cracking concrete on the airport’s apron and air carrier ramps.

“We’d done a lot of concrete replacement,” he said.

Tippetts said the final project has been postponed because it involves replacing concrete next to the terminal, and officials are in preliminary discussions about rebuilding or replacing the terminal at some point in the future.

Also on Monday, the state announced the allocation of $5.7 million in grants to 50 airports and one aviation association across the state for various projects. Grand Junction Regional Airport will receive $250,000 from the state, which will be paired with money from the airport and the federal government, to pay for concrete ramp rehabilitation and the construction of a security fence.
