Three GJ dentists to offer free services

Local dentists Julie Gillis, Kenneth Perino and Duane Weenig will sponsor the second annual Free Dental Day next week.

The dentists will offer free dental X-rays, cleanings, fillings, extractions and oral cancer screenings on Sept. 23. Patients should arrive at 8 a.m. at Weenig’s office at 790 Wellington Ave., Suite 205, or at Gillis’ office at 1190 Bookcliff Ave., Unit 201, to participate in Free Dental Day. All services are first-come, first-served. Additional screenings and treatments will be completed Sept. 24 at all three dentists’ offices. Perino’s office is at 2532 F Road, Suite 10.

Free Dental Day served 118 patients last year. Participants received 122 extractions, 66 oral cancer screenings, 39 cleanings, 27 fillings and five gum surgeries.

Presentation about reducing stroke risk

A pharmacist will discuss ways to reduce the risk of having a second stroke, speaking during a monthly meeting of the St. Mary’s Stroke Support Group for stroke survivors, caregivers and friends and family of stroke survivors.

The free session will take place from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Friday in the Grand Mesa Room on the second floor of the St. Mary’s Life Center, 1100 Patterson Road.

The pharmacist will discuss how to reduce the risk of stroke with medication and lifestyle choices. The session will involve information and a question-and-answer section.

Suicide prevention trainings this month

The Aspen Hope Center and the Garfield County Suicide Prevention Coalition are offering free suicide prevention courses every Tuesday this month for community members on the Western Slope.

Light refreshments will be served at each 90-minute class. Discussion topics include signs of depression and suicidal behavior, how to talk to someone who may be at risk of committing suicide, and how to get help for suicidal people.

Classes will take place today at 6:30 p.m. at New Castle Town Hall and at 5:30 p.m. in the Glenwood Board of County Commissioners meeting room.
