Homeless man beaten to death

A 43-year-old homeless Grand Junction man has been arrested on suspicion of beating to death another homeless man in Grand Junction, according to the Grand Junction Police Department.

Michael Allan Bateman was arrested Saturday afternoon on suspicion of second-degree murder and first-degree assault in the Friday night death of Todd Raymond Pierce, 46.

Bateman is being held in Mesa County Jail on $500,000 bond.

Sgt. Tony Clayton, a detective with the Police Department, said Bateman’s charges may change as the investigation continues.

Shortly before midnight Friday, the Police Department was dispatched to the west bank of the Colorado River near 140 Power Road on the report of a dead man.

An autopsy revealed Pierce died of multiple blunt force trauma from being beaten , Clayton said.

Interviews with eyewitnesses led officers to Bateman, who officers arrested about one mile from the crime scene after following his footprints in the snow.

Bateman was arrested without incident.

Clayton said Bateman and Pierce appeared to have known each other, but Clayton did not say what Bateman had told investigators in his interview.

Both Bateman and Pierce appeared to have been drinking before Pierce’s death, Clayton
added.
