District 51 students turn out to vote in record numbers

Kids Voting got out the vote this election season in record-setting fashion, though these ballot-casters may have to wait a few years for their votes to count.

Kids Voting is an organization dedicated to encouraging civic engagement in students across District 51 and held a mock election alongside the one that decided the next president of the country and several of Colorado’s elected officials Tuesday.

“This was our biggest year yet in 12 years,” said Martha Graf, executive director of Kids Voting.

“More high school students voted than ever.”

About 16,820 District 51 students cast a vote this year, which is about three-fourths of the total student population. Grand Junction High School posted the highest turnout with 67.5 percent of the student body.
