Hotchkiss man dies in equipment accident

A 26-year-old Hotchkiss man died from his injuries after heavy construction equipment he was operating rolled down an embankment about 90 feet and pinned him underneath on Monday.

Nolan Lawrence Allen was working in Bear Ranch Development near Somerset, and co-workers found his body, according to Gunnison County Undersheriff Rick Besecker. Allen apparently died immediately, and no one saw the accident, Besecker said.

Allen was driving a “mammoth” piece of equipment, made by Caterpillar, he said.

No apparent careless behavior is evident, Besecker said, and drugs and alcohol are not considered factors.

An investigation is ongoing.
