Job fair today at DoubleTree
The Mesa County Workforce Center will host its annual Jump Start Job Fair from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. today at The DoubleTree by Hilton, 743 Horizon Drive.
More than 40 employers from various industries are expected to have booths at the job fair. Workforce center Business Services Manager Suzie Miller said today’s event will be the largest job fair the workforce center has hosted since the pre-recession days of 2008.
“We’ve had more interest from employers and the employers have more positions” to offer, Miller said.
The workforce center had about 25 employer booths at its 2009 job fair, Miller estimated, and 32 to 35 booths at last year’s job fair.
The center had so little interest from job-offering employers in 2010 and 2011 that the job fair became a “resource fair” those two years, meaning the fair offered information about social services and job training opportunities instead of introducing job-seekers to hiring companies.
In the past, some companies at the fair have screened job candidates but were not hiring at the time of the fair. This year, Miller said she believes all companies at the fair will be hiring.
“We have a great variety of businesses: Community Hospital, FCI, lots of construction, lots of health care, landscaping,” Miller said.
Last year, more than 1,500 people attended the fair seeking jobs. Attendance is expected to remain high this year because Mesa County finished 2012 with an unemployment rate of 8.6 percent in December, according to the Colorado Department of Labor and Employment. The state had an unemployment rate of 7.5 percent in December, by comparison.
The workforce center is encouraging job applicants to come to the fair dressed appropriately for a job interview and bearing multiple copies of their resumes. The workforce center offers resume preparation assistance and job applicants can print their resumes on high-quality paper at the center.
