Legend’s 3-point shooting too much for GJ in loss

The Legend High School boys basketball team Grand Junction faced Wednesday night was not the one the Tigers saw on film in preparation for their nonleague game.

Legend made nine 3-pointers and put away the Tigers by outscoring them 25-9 in the fourth quarter for a 64-39 win.

“That wasn’t the scouting report we had from the film we saw,” Grand Junction assistant coach Isaac Madison said of the Titans’ outside shooting. “We didn’t think they could shoot like that. They proved us wrong.”

Legend took control early, grabbing an 18-8 lead after one quarter, but the Tigers played even with the Titans in the middle quarters and had them within striking distance, trailing by nine points entering the final frame. Legend, however, scored nine points in the first minute of the fourth quarter to extend its lead to 18 points.

“We had three really costly turnovers to start the fourth quarter,” Madison said.

Broderick Robinson paced the Tigers (12-5) with 11 points and Greg Eccher and D.J. Wells each added 10 points.

Jonathan Cosmann led the Titans with 16 points.

“We just played a good team, and we didn’t play well enough to win,” Madison said.

ThunderRidge outscored Grand Junction 37-26 in the second half to pull away for a 60-48 nonleague victory.

Grand Junction coach Sam Provenza said the Tigers didn’t quite match the scoring runs the Grizzlies made in the second half. The Tigers came back from two of them, but not ThunderRidge’s third and final run.

Grand Junction also failed to match the Grizzlies at the free-throw line, where the Tigers were 5 of 13 and ThunderRidge made 15 of 18.

“They’re a good team,” Provenza said. “You never like to lose, but if you learn from it, something good can come from it.”

Sydni Brandon and Sarah Wilkinson each scored 11 points to lead the Tigers (14-3).
