Legislative panel assignments made

Mesa County’s newly elected state senator, Rep. Steve King, will serve on three major committees when the Colorado Legislature reconvenes next year.

The Grand Junction Republican, who has served the past four years in the Colorado House, will be on the Senate Judiciary and Transportation committees.

King, who replaces outgoing Sen. Josh Penry, R-Grand Junction, also will serve on the Legislative Audit Committee, which scrutinizes various state agencies and government programs.

Another Western Slope state representative moving to the Colorado Senate next year, Ellen Roberts, of Durango, will serve as the ranking Republican on the Senate Local Government and Energy Committee. Roberts, an attorney, also will serve on the Senate Health and Human Services and Legal Services committees.

And returning Sen. Al White, R-Hayden, who recently was not asked to return to the powerful Joint Budget Committee after many years there, instead will serve on the Senate Appropriations Committee. He also will be the ranking Republican on the Business Affairs, Labor and Technology Committee, and will serve on the Senate Agriculture and Natural Resources Committee.

House speaker-to-be Frank McNulty, R-Highlands Ranch, has not yet named committee assignments, so it’s unknown on which panels Rep.-elect Ray Scott, R-Grand Junction, or Rep. Laura Bradford, R-Collbran, will serve. Bradford, however, already was tapped as chairwoman of the House Local Government Committee.
