The driver of a pickup died Friday when he pulled into traffic on U.S. Highway 6&50 and was struck broadside by a garbage truck, according to the Grand Junction Police Department.

Just before 2 p.m. the driver of a pickup stopped behind another motorist to make a left turn from F Road onto eastbound U.S. 6&50.

After becoming impatient, the pickup driver, whose name has not yet been released, moved into the oncoming lane on F Road in front of the other motorist and attempted to make a left turn, Police Department spokeswoman Kate Porras said.

When he did so, he was immediately struck broadside by a large, green Waste Management truck that was traveling west on the highway.

The pickup driver died at the scene, while the trash truck driver was unharmed.

Still, the Waste Management truck driver was taken to St. Mary’s Hospital as a precaution, Porras said.

Police closed the highway between 23 and 24 roads for several hours Friday as they attempted to extricate the body from the pickup.
