Man dies in crash near Mesa

An Orchard City man was killed after his truck careened off a 200-plus-foot embankment on Colorado Highway 65 near Mesa, according to the Colorado State Patrol.

Donald R. Mathews, 66, was found dead in his Ford F-250 on Thursday around 9 a.m. after a worker with the Colorado Department of Transportation came across the crash near mile marker 33.

Troopers said they believe the accident happened Wednesday afternoon or evening, or in the predawn hours Thursday.

The State Patrol said Mathews was driving north on Colorado 65 when his truck ran off the right side of the road and struck a post. Mathews’ truck lurched to the left, into the opposite lane of traffic before traveling back to the right and running off a rocky embankment.

Mathews was pronounced dead at the scene.

Alcohol, drugs and excessive speed are not considered factors in the accident, the State Patrol said.
