Man dies in rollover crash

A Colorado State patrolman surveys a fatal crash Monday afternoon along U.S. Highway 50.

A 50-year-old man died Monday afternoon after rolling his vehicle on U.S. Highway 50 on Orchard Mesa, according to the Colorado State Patrol.

The man, whose name and hometown weren’t released, was heading east when he veered off the highway near the KOA Campground just before 1 p.m.

His Subaru Outback rolled through two fences and landed on its roof within inches of a home at 2827 U.S. Highway 50.

The man was rushed to St. Mary’s Hospital but died there, Trooper Nate Reid said.

The house appeared to be undamaged.

Reid said it isn’t clear what caused the vehicle to go off the highway and that the accident remains under investigation.

One lane of eastbound U.S. 50 was closed for a short time while troopers investigated the crash.
