Man killed, two people hurt in I-70 Business Loop crash
A traffic accident that killed one man and injured two other people closed the Interstate 70 Business Loop for several hours Wednesday, including the evening rush hour.
Thomas E. Shelhammer, 82, of Clifton, was pronounced dead at the scene. He was not wearing a seatbelt, according to an accident report provided by the Colorado State Patrol.
The driver of the pickup that struck Shelhammer’s car, Amanda Ford, and her 9-year-old daughter were taken to a hospital and treated for minor injuries. They were both wearing seatbelts, the State Patrol said.
The accident happened about 3 p.m. in the eastbound lanes of I-70B, across from Renta Space LLC, 3038 I-70B.
State Patrol Trooper Don Moseman said Shelhammer, driving a Chevy Malibu, was attempting to turn east onto I-70B from the I-70B Frontage Road when his car was struck broadside by a Ford F-150 pickup traveling west on I-70B.
The impact launched the Malibu off the shoulder of the south side of the divided highway.
Alcohol, drugs and speed were not considered to be factors in the crash, the State Patrol said.
Traffic eastbound on I-70B from 30 Road, and westbound from Warrior Way was moving again in both directions by 6 p.m.
