Mavs cross country teams picked near bottom of RMAC

Expectations for the Colorado Mesa University women’s cross country team are down this year.

The Mavericks, who lost their top three runners to graduation, are picked to finish ninth in the RMAC preseason coaches poll, released Thursday.

Mesa has four returning runners from its team that finished eighth in the NCAA Division II Central Regional, led by sophomores Melissa Bauer and Shannon Emery. Amanda Anderson and Mayra Garcia also return.

Adams State University received eight first-place votes and is favored to overtake Western State Colorado University for the RMAC team title. The Grizzlies have five runners on the preseason All-RMAC team, led by preseason runner of the year Kelly Lamb. The junior is a three-time All-American and two-time RMAC champion.

Western State Colorado received five first-place votes and is picked second. Colorado School of Mines is third and Metro State is fourth.

Men

Expectations for the Colorado Mesa men aren’t much different in the program’s second year.

The Mavericks are picked to finish last for the second straight year.

Adams State received 10 first-place votes to win the RMAC. Adams State sophomore Tabor Stevens is the men’s preseason runner of the year. He is a five-time All-American runner in cross country and track.

Defending RMAC champion Western State Colorado is picked second with three first-place votes. Colorado School of Mines is third, Metro State is fourth and New Mexico Highlands is fifth.
