Mavs unveil a new logo

The Maverick logo is no longer looking at an angle.

On Wednesday, Colorado Mesa University released its new Maverick logo. The Maverick’s head is tilted with a menacing look.

“It’s a bolder version that complements our new athletic signature and graphics,” CMU Executive Director of Marketing Rick Taggart said in a release. “We kept some elements of the previous look but this, I think, is a much stronger look.”

CMU Athletic Director Butch Miller said he likes the new logo.

“We looked at four or five renditions,” Miller said. “This one stuck out right away to me.”

The new logo will eventually go on Wayne Nelson Court in Brownson Arena, Walker Field and in the locker rooms.

The athletic teams can use the new logo starting in the 2012-13 school year, depending what teams are due for new uniforms.

Miller said it will be up to the individual coaches if they want it on their uniforms, including the football team’s helmets.

“You can center (the logo),” Miller said. “With the old one, we had a hard time centering it on the hats and T-shirts.”

Miller said Mesa will send the logo to their Nike representative to have T-shirts, hats and other memorabilia made, but doesn’t know yet when clothing with the new logo will be available for purchase.

“We hope to spin it around fast,” Miller said.

Students, faculty, staff and alumni had the opportunity to give input into the selection of the new logo, according to a press release.
