Mesa Theater sold to former Boise bar owner

Andy Pittman of Grand Junction bought the Mesa Theater & Club.

Iconic downtown Grand Junction entertainment venue Mesa Theater & Club has sold.

Owner David Prather, who has run the business for the past 14 years, sold the venue to former Boise, Idaho, bar owner Andy Pittman, pending the deal’s closing June 11.

Pittman, 38, plans to rename the 538 Main St. space Mesa Theater & Lounge, but operate the business in much the same way as Prather.

All concerts on the schedule will remain the same, and any tickets purchased for upcoming shows are still valid.

Pittman owned the Vista Bar near Boise State University for nearly eight years before selling it. He said he’s looking forward to taking over the front lounge area of Mesa Theater.

“I want to fulfill the lounge’s potential,” Pittman said.

Pittman has no specific changes in mind but said there likely would be noticeable changes in the lounge within the first several months of taking over.

The financial terms of the sale were not disclosed.

Pittman first looked at purchasing Mesa Theater in November 2011, about one month after his family relocated to Grand Junction from Boise.

His wife is originally from this area, and the couple have two small children.

“I moved here looking to buy another bar or nightclub,” Pittman said.

The venue’s downtown location, its lounge area and its established theater have Pittman intrigued about the venue’s future.

He admittedly knows very little about running an indoor music venue, which is why Prather will stay at Mesa Theater for the first six months of Pittman’s ownership to help transition Pittman into running both a lounge and music venue.

Mesa Theater is one of western Colorado’s largest indoor music venues.

When Prather finishes helping Pittman transition into owner of the 10,000-square-foot venue, Prather will work with Sandstone Concert’s Ron Wilson to continue to bring larger shows to the area.

Eventually, Prather wants to become a band tour manager.

The phone number for Mesa Theater will stay 241-1717. Prather’s booking email will remain .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address). Pittman’s general email is .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address).
