Montrose business groups merge

Three Montrose business organizations are combining in an effort to streamline marketing efforts for local businesses and tourism.

The group, Montrose Association of Commerce and Tourism, includes the Montrose Area Merchants Association, the Montrose Chamber of Commerce and the Montrose Visitor & Convention Bureau.

“Hopefully it’s going to be one place to go if you’re going to be involved in tourism and retail enhancement,” said Ken Brengle, who was hired to lead the changes. “It will make a more unified voice for the business community.”

Corporate structure of the new group has been completed, including the passage of new bylaws, seated board members and a logo with the group’s name. Board members will be tasked with how to organize the new group in regards to staffing and creating a comprehensive plan. The consolidation is expected to save on costs by working out of one location, instead of three. It’s also expected to promote more special events during the city’s slower months, from October to May, Brengle said.

Montrose’s Chamber of Commerce included 616 members from the city’s more than 1,500 retail establishments, Brengle said. There will be opportunities for businesses to gain membership in the new group.

With a population of about 18,000 in the city and 40,000 in Montrose County, the area has seen population growth of more than 30 percent in the past decade.

While some of the area’s growth has slowed in the past two years, group organizers hope the unified message can continue to attract new businesses and tourists. Using a depiction of the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park in its logo is a move to highlight the area’s attractions.

“We want to capitalize on that, that it’s in our backyard,” Brengle said of the national park. “What we offer is you can stay in Montrose and enjoy the San Juans on a daily basis and Blue Mesa Reservoir. Stay for a week and take short daily drives to experience all that Colorado has to offer.”
