Montrose may put trash service out for bid

MONTROSE — Montrose city officials next week will determine whether privatization of service will best suit the city’s sanitation operations and   residents. It also will determine whether curbside recycling within the city can be saved.

Montrose Public Works Director Jim Hougnon said the city is issuing requests for information this week to attract private companies that might want to take over the city’s service. He said if the city cannot agree to a company’s offer, the sanitation service will remain a city operation.

A notice will be published today in the Montrose Daily Press and displayed on the city’s website, http://www.cityofmontrose.org, requesting interested companies to submit proposals, Hougnon said. The city wants to know what a company would charge for providing the sanitation or recycling or both.

Hougnon said if privatization is deemed the best option, the city will put the service out for bid.

The deadline for companies to contact the city is Nov. 29, and Hougnon said a pair of Grand Junction companies already have expressed interest.

The city operates five trucks to service roughly 6,000 residential customers and 350 commercial businesses. If a private company takes over the city’s service, it would need to provide its own equipment, according to Hougnon, who added the city might consider selling its equipment to the company.

Hougnon said a citizen advisory committee is gauging whether curbside recycling in the city can be saved. In October the Montrose City Council voted to cut the program to balance the 2012 budget. The citywide program will end Jan. 1 and will save the city more than $200,000.

The committee met twice and will meet the next two Thursdays in the Centennial Room of the city offices in the Elks Civic Building, 107 S. Cascade Ave. Recommendations from the committee will be presented to the City Council next month.
