Monument art exhibit opens at City Hall

Grand Junction artist Seth Anderson’s painting “Grand Valley Dreams” will be one of the artworks on display at Grand Junction City Hall, in the Colorado National monument Centennial Art Exhibition. The opening is Friday Jan. 7 a 7 p.m.



Let your eyes take in the Art Exhibit of the Century thanks to the Colorado National Monument.

The exhibit, which is part of the monument’s centennial celebration, opens Friday, Jan. 7, with a reception from 5:30–7 p.m. at Grand Junction City Hall, 250 N. Fifth St.

The exhibit will be on display through March 30 on the second floor Community Art Wall.

Hosted by the monument and the Grand Junction Commission on Arts and Culture, the exhibit features the top 20 entries in an art contest to best portray the landscape, environment and wildlife of the monument. There are photographs, paintings and pen and ink drawings.

Best-of-show and first, second and third places will be announced at the opening reception. Refreshments also will be served.

A People’s Choice online competition will run from Jan. 8 through Feb. 28. Go to http://www.coloradonma.org to vote.

The exhibit will move to the Mesa County Community Services Building, 510 29 1/2 Road, on April 1 and will be on display there until June 30.

First Friday at the Art Center will be from 7–9 p.m. Friday, Jan. 7, at 1803 N. Seventh St.

This month, First Friday will feature an American Institute of Architects Member Architecture lecture panel as well as ongoing exhibits: Hot Pots — Wet Paint, by ceramicist Terry Shepherd and painter Sara Alyn Oakley; and The Outsiders’ “Takin’ It To The Street.”

An exhibit of photography of Michael Clason will be featured at a reception from 1–4 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 8, at Frame Depot, 529 Bogart Lane. The exhibit will be on display through Jan. 20. Call 245-6999 or go to http://www.framedepotGJ.com for information.

Planet Wines will host an art opening and reception from 5–9 p.m. Friday, Jan. 7, featuring artists Sara Alyn Oakley and DJ Janowski.

During the reception, the artists will demonstrate painting techniques. Their work will be displayed through January. Call 424-5432 for information.
