More school equals more learning

A presidential push for longer school days and school years may not be popular with a lot of folks, particularly students who would be affected by it. But the effort is sensible.

No one believes youngsters should spend every waking moment in the classroom. But it is clear that most students in the United States spend a good deal less time in class than their counterparts in most developed nations. Further, studies have shown that even a marginal increase in class time can lead to marked improvement in subjects such as math.

More time in class can make a big difference. That’s why we applauded School District 51 for adding days to its school calendar. As President Barack Obama said, students need additional class time to meet the challenges of the knowledge-based requirements of this century.
