Murder suspect expected to plead in early November

A Longmont man accused of stabbing to death a Grand Junction mother and daughter in 1975 is expected to enter a plea next month.

Jerry Nemnich, 64, appeared briefly in court Wednesday morning, when Public Defender Steve Colvin waived Nemnich’s right to hear further advisement on the six felony charges against Nemnich, including two counts of first-degree murder, two counts of felony murder and single counts of first-degree burglary and second-degree burglary.

Nemnich is accused of killing 24-year-old Linda Benson and her 5-year-old daughter, Kelley, inside their apartment in July 1975. He was arrested in April after Grand Junction police resurrected the investigation and turned over blood found at the Bensons’ apartment to the Colorado Bureau of Investigation for testing. Court records indicate the blood matched Nemnich’s DNA profile.

Nemnich, who most recently worked as a long-haul trucker, was expected to enter a plea Wednesday, but Colvin asked for more time to review DNA evidence in the case.

Mesa County District Judge Brian Flynn scheduled another hearing for Nov. 3, when Nemnich is expected to plead not guilty and have the case set for trial.

Nemnich also is under investigation in Denver for the rape and murder of University of Denver student June Kowaloff in 1973.

He remains in the Mesa County Jail on $3 million bond.
