National parks go sans entrance fees for week

National Park Week offers the opportunity to explore any of Colorado’s national parks and monuments. Tag along with a ranger on a spring hike in Mesa Verde National Park, whichagain this summer is offering special limited-entry hikes to remote ruins.

National Park Week begins Saturday and runs through April 24, and you probably aren’t surprised to learn western Colorado offers a variety of parks and monuments in which to spend a day or two or seven.

There are 394 national parks (nationwide, not just in Colorado), all celebrating this year’s theme of “Healthy Parks, Healthy People.” It’s connecting the role our parks and monuments play in human and environmental health.

As a bonus, entrance fees will be waived at all parks and monuments during the week, making your visit not only healthy but economical.

Everyone loves national parks, even recalcitrant politicians. At least, they say they do.

WHAT: National Park Week at 394 parks and monuments.

WHERE: From fossil beds to ancient ruins, desert hikes to high-country skiing.

WHEN: Saturday through April 24, all entrance fees waived.
