Next council may include Reford redux

Six years after he left the Grand Junction City Council, Reford Theobold wants another shot at the office.

We wish him good luck. Theobold served the city well during his 18 years on the council.

And, though we had our share of differences with him, he can boast a number of accomplishments. They include his work on the Persigo Wash wastewater treatment system agreement with Mesa County, a substantial expansion of the city’s parks and the handling of the city’s budget during the deep recession of the 1980s.

But Theobold is challenging incumbent Councilwoman Bonnie Beckstein, who has her own record to run on this year. Voters may find her more recent tenure on the council every bit as appealing as Theobold’s longer record in the more distant past.

Theobold and Beckstein aren’t the only City Council candidates, however. One of the promising signs for the city and its voters is the number of people who have taken out petitions to become candidates for council seats, thereby offering voters a number of choices in the April election.

As of Friday, there were 10 potential candidates for four seats on the council. And only one, incumbent Councilwoman Teresa Coons, is so far unchallenged. Petitions must be returned to the city clerk’s office by Jan. 26.

A variety of difficult issues confront the city and its elected leaders now, including the economic conditions, the need for a new public safety building and the controversy over how the Colorado River corridor should develop through the heart of the city.

We’re pleased to see so many city residents willing to step up and take on these challenges by seeking election to what is basically a voluntary position with a small stipend.
