I resolve to get the arts and entertainment scene hopping

I know this is a tad bit late, but what the heck.

I made up some New Year’s resolutions for the Grand Junction entertainment scene as suggested by me, Samantha Stiles, resident young person and complainer.

Let’s face it, last year wasn’t a spectacular year for the arts in Grand Junction. We fared much better in 2007.

Quite frequently what I hear from concert promoters, artists, musicians, etc., is that there are a lack of places to put on shows and that sales are down.

If I don’t tell the local entertainment scene what it should be doing, then who will?

1. How many times has Powerman 5000 and Hed(PE) played in Grand Junction recently?
A million. Let’s get some variety up in here.

2. The upcoming local concert schedule is testosterone heavy. We need some ladies to lighten things up.

3. There needs to be at least one new venue for live music that doesn’t also serve french fries.
I’d be OK with it serving chips and salsa, or candy; I like both of those things.

4. I know it’s not super popular with local buyers, but I want to see more abstract and contemporary art exhibits.
As much as I appreciate the city’s many talented realist and landscape artists, I think the community and especially a younger generation can benefit from seeing what else is out there in the big art world.

5. A successful independent movie series (good luck ReelTime).

Five resolutions are enough for now. It’s a substantial leaping off point. What my hope is that promoters and those interested in giving local entertainment a boost hang in there.

Personally, I vow to broaden my horizons this year and to not be reluctant to spend my hard-earned money on bands that deserve it.

Here’s what you can expect from me as a writer — well researched and interesting stories from the entertainment scene.

Thanks to our Out & About redesign, I’ll have more flexibility as far as cover stories go.

I hope you like it.
