Olathe wins 2A title, Glenwood wins in 3A

Sports top ten story No. 02

Glenwood Springs also brought home a state title in 2008, defeating Fort Morgan 23-14 in the 3A state championship game.

Olathe High School football players celebrate after winning the state 2A title.

Back-to-back games. Back-to-back championships for the Western Slope.

The Nov. 29 high school football championships won by Olathe and Glenwood Springs were voted the

No. 2 sports story of the year.

The championships capped a pair of 14-0 seasons for the schools.

That day at Legacy Stadium at Cherokee Trail High School in Aurora, Olathe won the Class 2A championship by defeating Erie 22-21 in overtime, led by running back David Rhodes, who rushed for 223 yards.

Glenwood Springs won the Class 3A championship a few hours later 23-14 over Fort Morgan, led by quarterback Dakota Stonehouse. The senior quarterback had a spectacular
season, combining for 46 touchdowns throwing and rushing.

But it wasn’t one guy for either team, it was the combination of the right kids in the right year.

“The kids’ commitment and what they brought to the team was very unique,” Olathe coach
Ryan Corn said.

Since winning the championship, Corn said he has received a lot of support from the community.

“The coolest thing has been the letters I have gotten from the Olathe alumni, telling how they were there to watch. I think that is pretty special.”

It was the first state championship for the Pirates and the first since 1980 for Glenwood Springs.
