Fifty years ago, Main Street was transformed by Operation Foresight from a dull straight road to a “pedestrian friendly shopping park with a serpentine street and beautiful trees” a news release said.

A celebration of that 1962 renovation and the remodel completed in 2011 will include activities on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 7–8, on Main Street.

The Operation Foresight sculpture is the fifth installment in five years in The Legends of the Grand Valley sculpture project. It will be unveiled at 5:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 7, at Third and Main streets in front of Marriott Spring Hill Suites.

The Operation Foresight 50th anniversary celebration will be from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 8, on Main Street between Third and Seventh streets with a celebration ceremony set for 11 a.m. at Fourth and Main streets.

During the anniversary celebration, the public is invited to browse a 1960s car show, see dance demos and listen to DJ rock ‘n’ roll. There will be a soda fountain, chalk art, historic photos, Chautauqua performers, the Centennial Band will play and Defy Gravity will put on an aerial show.

One block will have only kids activitie, including Bump ‘n’ Jumps, face painting, balloon twisting and LEGO stations.

Free art lessons will be available from six instructors. This Main Street Art School will be at Sixth and Main street. Sign up in advance at Oakley Gallery. There is a $5 supply fee.
