Pain center to fill void in care

Although the exterior is virtually finished, work continues on the interior of the new Colorado Injury and Pain Specialists building located at 201 W. Park Ave. Western Constructors of Fruita is the general contractor for the new building.

Dan Williams of Barnes Electric installs the electrical wiring for equipment along the metal studs of what will become the X-ray room inside the new Colorado Injury and Pain Specialists building.

The $4.5 million pain management center under construction near North First Street and Patterson Road is scheduled to open in the fall with the goal of treating the Western Slope’s large population of weekend warriors.

DECA Health is a private development and management company owned exclusively by physicians that operates four other pain management centers across the Midwest. DECA plans to make the Grand Junction facility in the Corner Square development its flagship location, said DECA Director of Development David Prephan.

Locals who enjoy sports and outdoor activities often want treatment for aches and pains that doesn’t involve surgery or medication, Prephan said.

Pain that results from spine or sports injury, chronic illness, industrial accidents or car accidents will be the causes of pain most commonly treated at the center.

The center will offer a comprehensive, proprietary program designed especially for patients with those needs. Many disciplines will join under one roof to provide service.

“There’s a hole in the continuum of care that exists in Grand Junction,” Prephan said. “There are a couple of physicians who are doing pain management type procedures, but none of them in a comprehensive, multi-disciplinary setting like we’re trying to provide. Physicians and representatives have identified this as a need in the community.”

Prephan called DECA’s program “unique on the Western Slope.”

“What we’ve done is taken the discipline of pain management and added to it all of the different ancillary services that are required.”

Patients will be able to access physical therapy, massage therapy and a full-time clinical psychologist at the site.

The program also incorporates a number of different exercise therapies, including yoga, tai chi and Pilates programs designed specifically for pain management.

“We’ve made them convenient. We put them all under one roof so patients have access to them, so they can understand their importance and ... get an immediate opinion from experts and providers right there,” Prephan said.

The fully certified and licensed ambulatory surgical center is expected to provide “the full spectrum of non-invasive and minimally invasive procedures,” according to the center’s website.

Economies of scale will allow the center to make the services affordable to patients, Prephan said.

So far, contract negotiations are underway with one local pain management specialist and another from out-of-state who will relocate to the area. A sports medicine doctor has been identified and is expected to join the group in six to 12 months, he said.

DECA is finalizing contracts with a number of people in the community who will come together to form a new medical group to operate the center, which will be known as Colorado Injury and Pain Specialists, Prephan said.

“We are in the very finishing stages of working through the contracts. The legal teams are wrangling with a little bit of language and then we can execute the contracts and go from there,” he said.

DECA has met with representatives from St. Mary’s Hospital, Community Hospital and Rocky Mountain Health Plans to explain their vision for the center.

“We are committed 100 percent to working cooperatively with everyone in Grand Junction, regardless of hospital affiliation,” Prephan said. “We’re not here to steal market share or be adversaries, we’re here to fill a hole in the continuum of care.”
