Pedestrian hit, killed by car on Horizon Drive

A pedestrian was killed Sunday night after being hit by a car on Horizon Drive, Grand Junction police said.

Police spokeswoman Kate Porras said 911 emergency dispatchers received a call at 8:10 p.m. about a man who was in the roadway on Horizon Drive.

About a minute later, dispatchers were informed that a person had been struck by a white Pontiac Grand Am between Denny’s Restaurant, 710 Horizon Drive, and Country Inns of America, 718 Horizon Drive.

The pedestrian was taken by ambulance to St. Mary’s Hospital but later pronounced dead, Porras said. The person’s age or name wasn’t released.

The female driver of the Pontiac was heading east on Horizon when she struck the pedestrian.

Porras said she didn’t know which lane the Pontiac was in or whether there were other people in the vehicle. She said alcohol wasn’t believed to be a factor in the crash.

Officers were interviewing both the driver of the Pontiac and the driver of another vehicle that was near the Pontiac when the collision occurred to try to learn more about how the collision occurred, Porras said.    No arrests were made as of 9:30 p.m. Sunday.

The eastbound lanes of Horizon Drive were closed for at least a couple of hours while police investigated.
