Quilt raffle set for local sewing club
The Sunset Slope Quilters got their first peek Wednesday morning at the beautiful quilt that will be grand prize in club’s raffle next year.
The quilt, titled “Lucky Stars,” was made by local quilter, designer and author Linda Jenkins, who owns Piece O’ Cake Designs. It is valued at more than $3,800.
The club will begin selling tickets Jan. 1, through Oct. 1, for $1 each. Their goal is to sell at least 10,000 within that time, said Phyllis Burdick, president.
The quilt was unveiled at the monthly meeting. Today’s meeting included a presentation called “Where Women Create” by Marion Fenner. She discussed some creative ways to organize quilting stash within the sewing room. It was followed by their regular business meeting, which included reports from a variety of committees including the community affairs committee who reported that 230 quilted stockings have been completed and will be given to children in foster care this Christmas.
The club has a growing membership of 231 women who meet at 9:15 a.m. on the second Wednesday of each month at American Lutheran Church, 631 26 1/2 Road.
“It’s just our passion,” Burdick said. “We meet to discuss sewing and to just make good friendships.”
Within the club, there are a variety of sub-groups who meet to sew and focus on their personal interests. For example, some sub-groups enjoy creating miniature or applique quilts, Burdick said.
The club comes together for special projects such as making baby blankets, quilts for the ill or community donations such as to the Latimer House, Burdick added.
“We are a very active group with a variety of sewing interests,” Burdick said.
Regularly, the club has international quilting experts come to Grand Junction to speak and give programs to Sunset members.
“It is expensive to bring these folks in,” Burdick explained. “That’s why we needed to have such a large fundraiser such as the Piece O’ Cake design next year.”
Their next quilt show will be at Barnes and Noble Booksellers on Dec. 9. A portion of book and food sales will benefit the quilters that day.
