Resource fair can’t offer employment

Even job-fair coordinators are having a tough time finding jobs to highlight in Mesa County.

That’s part of the reason why the annual Jump Start Resource Fair hosted by the Mesa County Workforce Center switched last year from a job fair to a resource fair. This year’s fifth annual fair, which will take place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday at Lincoln Park Barn, won’t feature booths with employers ready to offer positions, but it will offer booths with information about resources for job seekers and anyone else who needs guidance on social services.

The fair attracted about 1,400 people last year, according to Mesa County Workforce Center Supervisor Gilbert Lujan. Some came expecting a job fair, but Lujan said those aren’t as easy to organize as they used to be.

“Employers don’t need to attend job fairs to find a qualified candidate anymore. They just post an ad, and they get hundreds of applications,” Lujan said.

About 50 community organizations will be available at the fair, providing assistance and information for such things as:

health care; food and clothing; transportation; legal services; disability and mental health services; family and child care services; education; training and employment; youth and senior services; veterans services; victims assistance; financial planning; shelter and affordable housing.
