Retaining judges is sensible
Voters in Mesa County will find nine questions on their election ballot this year, asking if they want to retain state and county judges in their judicial posts.
We recommend they vote to retain Justice Nathan B. Coats of the Colorado Supreme Court, six justices on the Colorado Court of Appeals and two Mesa County judges.
Voters who want more detailed information on each of these jurists should consult the Blue Book prepared by the state’s Legislative Council. It contains information and recommendations on all the judges, prepared by Commissions on Judicial Performance. The commissions recommended all of the above judges be retained.
That’s as it should be. Colorado’s judicial retention system is designed to keep judges on the bench so long as they are performing their duties. We should vote against retaining them only if we believe they are negligent in their duties or clearly abusing their powers. Retention votes shouldn’t be based on political views or simple disagreement with a judge’s decisions.
