Salazar, Udall encourage early voting

When Congressman John Salazar, D-Colo., told a group of Mesa County Democrats on Wednesday that the election was not about the party’s presidential candidate, Barack Obama, or its U.S. Senate candidate, Mark Udall, Brendan Stewart was shocked.

“You are the salt of the earth,” Salazar said. “Let me tell you something: This election, it’s not about Mark Udall. It’s not about John Salazar. It’s not about Bernie Buescher. It’s not about Barack Obama.”

“What?” Stewart yelled.

“This election is about you,” Salazar assured the 8-year-old boy.

Salazar and Udall stopped in Grand Junction as part of their bus tour of western Colorado.

Both congressmen encouraged the nearly 100 at their rally at the Mesa County Democratic Party headquarters, 251 Colorado Ave.

Udall assured the crowd they soon will be able to tune in to their favorite television shows without seeing ads attacking local and statewide candidates.

In the meantime, he encouraged local voters to vote early either by mail or during the state’s early-voting period, which started Monday.

“I love going to the polls on Election Day. There’s an electricity. I like to be there, but this year I already voted,” Udall said. “That is the way to make sure this election is successful.”

To vote early, you can either request a mail-in ballot from the Mesa County Clerk and Recorder’s Office or visit one of the five early voting locations:

• The Mesa Mall near the Grand Junction Police Department substation, 2424 U.S. Highway 6&50;

• The old county courthouse, 544 Rood Ave.;

• The Clifton Community Hall, 126 2nd St.;

• The Mesa County Fairgrounds, 2785 U.S. Highway 50; or;

•  The Fruita Police Department, 101 W. McCune Ave.

As of Tuesday night, 13,378 of Mesa County’s 93,405 registered voters had either voted early or cast a mail-in ballot.
