Saturday ties record; more heat coming

Robin Slater, right, and her daughter, 14-year-old Madi Slater, both from Grand Junction keep cool by playing in the water at the Northwoods Apartment pool, 3505 N. 12th St. on Saturday, July 17, 2010.

Saturday’s 104-degree temperature tied a record set in 1971, weather officials said.

And don’t expect those highs to abate for a couple more days yet, said Norv Larson, a senior meteorologist with the Grand Junction office of the National Weather Service.

Temperatures today and Monday will be approaching the 103- and 104-degree records set for the two days, respectively.

“July is always one of our hottest months,” Larson said. “There’s a high over the region that has stagnated and should remain for the next couple of days.”

Saturday was the third consecutive day temperatures broke 100 degrees in Grand Junction.

He said temperatures today and Monday will remain in the 100s, but a “cooling trend” will hit by Tuesday.

And by “cooling,” Larson means the 90s, just in time for the start of the Mesa County Fair, which begins Tuesday and runs through Saturday.

Also on Saturday, Denver broke 100 degrees for the first time since 2008. A reading of 102 degrees Saturday afternoon broke a record.

The last time Denver hit a triple-digit temperature was Aug. 2, 2008.

The 102-degree reading at Denver International Airport broke a record set in 1971.
