Settlement would lessen fine for Maes

Attorneys for gubernatorial candidate Dan Maes and a Grand Junction man who filed a campaign finance complaint against him are expected to sign an agreement today that will end the matter.

Grand Junction attorney Erik Groves said he and his client, Christopher Klitzke, have agreed to drop the case if Maes agreed to pay a lesser fine.

So instead of the $27,000 fine Maes initially had agreed to pay in his response to Klitzke’s complaint, the two sides have agreed to a $17,500 fine, Groves said.

The agreement means next week’s hearing on the matter will be vacated, he said.

The issue began when Klitzke filed a complaint with the Secretary of State’s Office last month, alleging that the Republican candidate improperly reimbursed himself for mileage costs, accepted at least one corporate donation and failed to properly list occupations of all his donors, as is required by law.

Maes, who is vying for the GOP nomination against Scott McInnis, is expected to hold a press conference as early as today to address the matter.
