Shooting leaves 1 dead, 3 injured at West Vail bar

One person was killed and three were wounded in a shooting Saturday at a sports bar in West Vail.

Vail and Eagle County emergency crews responded around 7:30 p.m. to the Sandbar Sports Grill, 2161 W. Frontage Road, on reports of multiple shots fired, according to the Vail Police Department.

The suspected shooter, Richard Moreau, 63, of Vail, is in custody.

The three people who were wounded were taken by ambulance to Vail Valley Medical Center. One was in serious condition as of late Saturday, Vail police said.

Bar patron Nancy Lewis said she saw a man being escorted out of the bar and speaking incoherently, according to The Associated Press. She said he then pulled out a gun and shot someone in the arm.

Other witnesses said the man fired several shots, then re-entered the bar and fired several more shots.

Police as of late Saturday had not released the identities of the victims.

The bar is located just south of Interstate 70, at the West Vail exit.

Kris Friel, Vail Police spokeswoman, said her agency had several contacts with Moreau prior to Saturday.

Friel said it wasn’t immediately known whether Moreau knew his victims and the motive is unknown.
