Shoppers find day-after-Christmas deals

Michael Reinhardt of Delta listens as CHRYSTAL BOOKS AND GIFTS owner Cheryl Lucas tells him about a telescope which he bought at the store.

Michael Reinhardt of Delta knew exactly what he wanted for Christmas as he made a beeline for a downtown Grand Junction shop on Saturday.

As she has most years, Reinhardt’s wife, Nancy, decided to buy her husband a gift the day after Christmas, so he can pick out what he wants. The typical after-holiday discounts don’t hurt either.

“When I’m not sure what he wants, I wait,” Nancy Reinhardt said. “You can get better deals sometimes, too.”

Michael Reinhardt got what he wanted, ordering a telescope from Crystal Books and Gifts, 439 Main St.

Like the Reinhardts, shoppers were out and about in the downtown area and at Mesa Mall on Saturday snapping up deals under signs promising deep discounts.

According to the online Web site ShopperTrak,, a company that tracks shopping data, the day after Christmas last year was the third busiest day for the nation’s retailers.

Black Friday was the busiest shopping day, and the Saturday before Christmas was the second busiest last year, according to the site.

Mark Wingerter, manager of Summit Canyon Mountaineering, 461 Main St., said the day after Christmas is an important day for sales at the store. Although many people were exchanging gifts for alternate sizes or colors, sales were brisk.

The store received multiple calls from people asking how late they would be open Saturday night, “which is always good,” Wingerter said. “That means we’re probably going to get a lot more traffic at the end of the day.”
