Mavs’ Kelly selected for Cactus Bowl

Mesa State defensive lineman Tony Kelly has been selected to play in the Cactus Bowl on Jan. 7. The Division II all-star game is at Javelina Stadium in Kingsville, Texas.

The 6-foot-3, 295-pound senior nose guard from Montrose started all 10 games for the Mavericks and was second on the team in tackles with 56, including 45 assisted tackles. He had 11 tackles for lost yardage, four sacks and recovered one fumble.

Kelly, a second-team All-RMAC player, is the fifth Mesa State player to be selected for the Cactus Bowl, following Jared Keating (2008), Kurt Kissner (2007), and Art Berlanga and Joe Krile (2006).

Prep Volleyball

Fruita’s Kovach, Central’s Wells make Denver Post’s all-state team

The Denver Post released its all-state volleyball selections on Thursday. Fruita Monument’s Camille Kovach and Central’s Ashley Wells were both selected honorable mention in Class 5A.

Tawni Middleton of Olathe earned Class 3A honorable mention honors and Ce’rra Carston of Paonia made the Class 2A honorable mention team.
