McClaskey selected to training pool

Baseley McClaskey, 13, is one of 36 female youth soccer players selected to the United States Olympic Development Program’s Western U.S. training pool for players born in 1997.

McClaskey, who trains with Colorado West Select Soccer Club in Grand Junction, will travel to California later this month for training and evaluation from regional and national ODP coaches.

After that, 18 of the 36 players will be selected for participation in the national ODP training pool.

Hoffman wins Ironman Munice

Ben Hoffman, 27, won the Ironman Munice 70.3 on Saturday in Selma, Ind., in 3 hours, 48 minutes, 14 seconds. He finished the bike portion of the race in 2:01:11, the fastest split of all the competitors. Hoffman finished 4:58 ahead of second-place finisher Mike Caiazzo, the 2009 winner.

It was his second Ironman win in the past 30 days. The Grand Junction native won the Ironman Boise 70.3 in June.

He will attempt to defend his title in the Ford Ironman Lake Placid (N.Y.) July 24.

Cycling

Mallow finishes fifth in Telluride

John Mallow of Grand Junction took fifth place in the Mountain States Cup Full Tilt cross-country mountain bike race on Saturday in Telluride.

The Ruby Canyon Cycles rider competed in the men’s Category 1, age 30-39 division. The race was 25.5 miles and was the Colorado State Championship race.
