Springhill Suites under construction at Third and Main streets

Construction has begun on a Springhill Suites by Marriott building at 236 Main St.

The five-story, 167,000-square-foot building will hold 100 suites and an executive board room, and it will have room for 2,000 square feet of retail space on the ground floor. Steve Reimer, who co-owns the hotel with brother Kevin Reimer, said the hotel will also have a bar area, although he hasn’t determined if the bar will be full-service, have just wine and beer, or focus more on coffee and espresso drinks.

Construction should take 10 to 12 months, Reimer said, and the hotel is planning a ground-breaking ceremony for Tuesday evening.

The hotel will be located on the corner of Third and Main streets, with parking behind and next to the building. More parking will be available northwest of the building. The Zellner’s Furniture building at 227 Rood Ave. will be demolished to make room for the parking lot.

The Springhill Suites was once part of a larger, seven-story concept called The Plaza that would have included office space and more room for retail.

“That was pre-financial meltdown,” Steve Reimer said. “It’s very difficult to borrow for construction these days, especially hotels. We had to scale it back a bit, but the hotel is the same size.”

The Reimers also own the Hampton Inn at 205 Main St., and Main Street Suites at 225 Main St. Main Street Suites is a temporary name until the hotel becomes a Hilton brand hotel. A Main Street Suites renovation project will begin late this fall or early this winter, Reimer said. Windows in the hotel have been replaced, and Reimer said televisions in the Main Street Suites and Hampton Inn will be replaced with high-definition, flat-screen TVs by the end of the summer.
