Substitute teacher dies at Clifton Elementary
A substitute teacher working at Clifton Elementary died unexpectedly Monday, but the incident did not occur in front of students, according to School District 51 spokesman Jeff Kirtland.
Williams Edwards, 71, of Loma, died of natural causes, and no suspicious circumstances surrounded the case, according to the Mesa County Coroner’s Office.
Kirtland said the teacher was in a classroom at the time of the 1:30 p.m. incident, but no students were present. He added the teacher died of an existing medical condition.
“It was a tough situation yesterday,” Kirtland said about the Monday incident.
The school at 3276 F Road was locked down for about two hours as officials dealt with the situation.
School officials sent a letter home with students about the incident and brought in a support team of counselors to help students and staff deal with the death, Kirtland said.
