Two injured in tank fire near Collbran

Two employees, contractors working for Oxy USA Inc., were injured in a flash fire today near a drilling operation south of Collbran.

The injured pair, with Wolverine Enterprises, were among a group of three who were cleaning out a production water tank when the fire happened around 12:30 p.m. according to a statement from Oxy USA. The men were taken to St. Mary’s Hospital and their conditions weren’t immediately confirmed.

“We are committed to protecting the safety, security and health of our workers and neighboring communities and safeguarding the environment,” the Oxy statement said. “We will conduct a thorough investigation to determine the cause of the incident and take appropriate measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.”

Initial emergency scanner traffic indicated that the men were on a ladder when a condensate tank exploded at a natural gas injection well an address on 60892 ME Road. The property was marked as private, while an official with Oxy restricted access to the scene and declined to answer questions about the incident.

Initial reports indicated that one man was critically injured with severe head injuries and facial trauma. The other man was less severely injured. Both men reportedly suffered burns to their hands.
