Teen dies of injuries suffered in accident
A 17-year-old Fruita Monument High School student who reportedly fell out of a moving vehicle over the weekend has died after being taken off life support, but the circumstances surrounding her death remain a mystery.
An autopsy performed by Mesa County Coroner Dean Havlik concluded that Caitlyn True died from blunt force injuries to her head, but Havlik did not rule on the manner of her death pending the outcome of the Mesa County Sheriff’s Department’s investigation.
Sheriff’s officials have said True reportedly fell out of a vehicle around 3 a.m. Saturday on 18 Road near N 3/10 Road. The Coroner’s Office said in a news release Monday that True’s 19-year-old boyfriend drove her to St. Mary’s after the incident.
In a statement released to the media, True’s family said the details of the incident aren’t clear but that she apparently fell and struck the back of her head, causing a deep gash and brain hemorrhage.
“The parents of Caitlyn True do not suspect criminal mischief at this point in time,” the statement read.
True’s family said she was kept on life support to honor her wish to be an organ donor.
