Tipton says he’s leading poll over Salazar
Republican Scott Tipton on Monday claimed a lead over three-term incumbent John Salazar in their race to represent the 3rd Congressional District.
An in-house poll by Magellan Data and Mapping Strategies shows Tipton favored by 49 percent to 43 percent, Tipton said.
A Salazar campaign spokesman said he was unconcerned by the poll because Salazar’s internal polling shows him in the lead.
Of the 973 respondents to the Tipton poll, which was taken by touch-tone responses on Aug. 17, 90 percent said they were “very likely” to vote in the November general election.
The poll shows that voters are responding to his message that “this is about jobs, good jobs,” Tipton said.
Respondents included 53 percent women and 47 percent men. The survey also was weighted toward Republicans, with 39 percent of respondents.
Democrats accounted for 34 percent of the respondents and unaffiliated voters accounted for 27 percent.
Magellan polled in the primary campaign for Senate candidate Ken Buck. The Tipton poll has a 3.14 percent margin of error.
The political website, www. realclearpolitics.com, ranks the 3rd Congressional District as leaning toward Salazar.
Tipton plans to make a campaign appearance at 7 tonight at the Holiday Inn Express, 1391 S. Townsend Ave., in Montrose.
