Tipton seeks House support in blasting Obama’s stance on Israel

U.S. Rep. Scott Tipton, R-Colo., is asking other representatives to sign on to a letter chiding President Barack Obama for urging Israel to return to its pre-1967 borders.

The letter tells the president, “We are extremely disappointed that you took it upon yourself to redefine the borders between Israel and Palestine.”

The United States should be a mediator that does not “further compromise security in an already volatile region,” the letter said.

Tipton is working with Reps. Mike Coffman, R-Colo., and Joe Walsh, R-Ill., to gather signatures from fellow representatives. They plan to send the letter this week.

Tipton issued the statement about the letter on the same day that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu spoke to a joint session of Congress.

Obama “was wrong to take it upon himself to redefine Israel’s borders,” Tipton said in the statement. “Israel is one of America’s greatest allies. It is imperative that we let the president know that members of Congress do not support his statements, nor think this is the best approach in trying to assist with resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.”
