University radio station to offer tuition in raffle

Raffle prizes come in all shapes, sizes, and values, but the leader of one Grand Junction organization is raffling off a prize he thinks is so fantastic thousands of tickets were printed in anticipation of demand.

For the first time, Colorado Mesa University’s student-run radio station, KMSA-FM 91.3, is raffling off 12 credit hours of in-state tuition valued at more than $4,000, general manager Kyle Davis said.

CMU President Tim Foster agreed to give KMSA the prize after the station’s previous operations manager, Sam Kilman, told Foster “how cool it would be” if the station could raffle off such a unique prize, Davis said.

“(Sam) was kind of surprised when Foster said, ‘Yeah,’ ” Davis added.

Foster was out-of-state and unavailable for comment, but CMU spokeswoman Dana Nunn said Foster liked the idea when he heard it.

Typically, Davis said, KMSA is funded through student fees, but he’s hopeful this raffle will generate enough money to help KMSA build an account for future raffles and operations costs that exceed student funding.

“We are really encouraging people in the community to jump on this,” Davis said.

This year is the only year CMU is footing the bill for KMSA’s raffle, Davis said. However, Davis is hopeful raffling off free credit hours becomes a tradition.

KMSA, most famous for its heavy metal shows from 7 p.m. Friday through 1 a.m. Sunday, has printed 8,000 tickets.

Foster will draw the winning name at “high noon” on Monday, Dec. 2, Davis said.

Tickets are $5 each and are available through Dec. 2 from any KMSA DJ, through the station’s office on the second floor of the University Center, or during College Night from 7:30 to 10 p.m., on Wednesday and Thursday nights at J F Strothman Distillery, 2862 North Ave.

KMSA’s raffle is open to anyone, and the prize can be used by any student of any age before 2016.
