Utah passes gun bill for open carry near schools
SALT LAKE CITY — Utah lawmakers have passed a bill allowing guns to be openly carried near Utah schools and universities.
Republican state Rep. Curt Oda of Clearfield says his measure removes a 1,000 foot buffer zone around campuses.
A similar measure passed Senate on Wednesday. It now goes to the governor for signature.
Republican Sen. Lyle Hillyard of Logan lost a bid to amend the bill to require those openly carrying a gun to stay at least 50 feet from school grounds.
Utah law already allows people with a concealed weapons permit to openly carry guns on school grounds or university campuses. The new law widens that area.
Opponents say any buffer zone infringes on the rights of gun owners.
