Western State wins men’s, women’s cross country team titles

Western State College won both the men’s and women’s team titles Saturday in the RMAC cross country championships in Denver.

The Colorado Mesa University women, running without All-American Alexis Skarda, finished seventh and the first-year men’s team was 12th.

Kelsey Follett led the Maverick women, placing 22nd in the 6-kilometer race in 23 minutes, 56 seconds. Shannon Emery was 40th (24:55), Brooke Bosman 42nd (24:58), Amanda Anderson 44th (24:59) and Melissa Bauer 53rd (25:23).

Western State’s Lauren Kleppin beat Adams State’s Alicia Nelson to the finish line, crossing in 21:12; Nelson was second in 21:28.

Adams State took second through fourth places, then four Western State runners crossed to clinch the championship.

Tyler Pennel of Western finished the men’s 8K race in 24:59 to lead the Mountaineers.

Shane Niksic of Colorado Mesa placed 64th in 28:58, Daniel Cicnero was 83rd (32:14), Jonathon Carlton 84th (32:19) and Connor Hill 87th (32:58).

The Mavericks return to Denver Nov. 5 for the NCAA Division II Central Region championship.

Kelly Regimbal had 15 kills as the Mavericks swept Western State College 25-21, 25-17, 25-21 in Gunnison.

With Sunni Rae Baird stepping in to set for Jordyn Moody, Colorado Mesa (9-12, 4-9 RMAC) broke a 10-10 tie in the second game by scoring six points in a seven-point span and closed it out.

In the final game, CMU got back-to-back kills by Antoinette McCormick and Haleigh Higgins and took advantage of an attack error by Western to lead 20-13.

The Mountaineers (6-16, 3-11) rallied, cutting it to 23-21, but Baird, who had 34 assists, set Regimbal twice in a row for kills to clinch the match.

Higgins finished with 10 kills and McCormick six.
